Preheat oven to 400°. Beat flour, baking powder, salt, and 3/4 cup butter in a large bowl with an electric mixer on low speed, then medium speed, until a dough with pea-sized lumps forms.

Add milk slowly and beat on low until mixed. Mix in cheese and 2 tsp garlic powder.

Spoon 2" dough lumps onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake biscuits 18–20 minutes till lightly brown.

Put 1/2 cup butter in a small heatproof basin and microwave for 20 seconds, stirring between each, until melted, about 1 minute.

While the biscuits are still warm, dab the butter mixture onto the top of each one.
