VA disability compensation is a lifeline for many veterans; it helps veterans who were hurt or sick while serving their country by giving them important cash support.
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) runs this program to honor the efforts service members have made and help them deal with the long-term effects of conditions they got while serving.
Veterans will be able to use these tax-free payments to help pay for medical care, daily living costs, and other needs that come up because of their conditions.

The Honoring Our Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics (PACT) Act, which was passed in 2022, makes it easier for veterans who have been exposed to burn pits and other toxic chemicals to get VA health care and benefits. This important law makes sure that soldiers and their families get the care and benefits they deserve, and it also fixes health problems that were caused by exposures like these.

Types of VA Disability Payments
VA disability payments come in various forms, each addressing different needs:
- VA Disability Pay: Veterans with service-related disabilities can get payments every month that range from $165 to over $3,600, based on how bad their disability is and whether they are dependent on anyone else.
- Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC): Tax-free monthly benefits for eligible surviving family members of veterans who died in service or from a service-connected condition.
- Veterans and Survivors Pension Compensation: Financial support for eligible low-income veterans and their surviving family members.
- Special Monthly Compensation (SMC): Veterans who lost or could not use certain organs or limbs because of their service will get extra funds.
- Aid and Attendance and Housebound Benefits: extra help to pay for the costs of care at home, in a nursing home, and with help living.
VA Disability Payment Amounts
VA disability compensation is money that soldiers with disabilities get that is not taxed and is based on illnesses or injuries they got or got worse while they were in the military. The severity of the disability is measured in 10% steps, going from 0% to 100%. The amount of pay changes based on this.
In some cases, like when you have dependents or a serious disability that needs extra help, you may be able to get more money. The numbers below show how much VA disability compensation will be paid starting on December 1, 2023. They take into account the 3.2% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) increase for 2024.

How to Apply for VA Disability Compensation
- Make sure that your disability is related to your work. This could be a sickness or injury that got worse or happened while you were in the military.
- Get together all the papers you need, like your medical records, military records, and any other proof that supports your injury claim.
- On VA Form 21-526EZ, which says “Application for Disability Compensation and Related Compensation Benefits,” fill it out. You can find this form on the VA website.
- You can mail your application, use the VA’s eBenefits site, or go to a regional office in person to turn it in.
- The VA will look over your claim after you send in your application. In this case, your business records and medical records may need to be checked.
- The VA may set up a Compensation and Pension (C&P) exam for you to see how disabled you are. You must go to this exam because it is very important for figuring out your situation.
- The VA will look over your claim and decide what to do. This could take months, so you need to be patient.
- The VA will send you a letter telling you whether your claim was accepted or not, and if it was accepted, what your grade was and how much you will be paid.
- You can File an Appeal if you don’t agree with the VA’s ruling. Carefully read the letter of decision and follow the directions for how to file an appeal.
- Once you’re accepted, make sure that your monthly payments are sent directly to your bank account. Also, keep the VA up to date on your contact and banking information, and find out about any changes or updates to your benefits.
