The company Costco Wholesale has agreed to pay $2 million to settle a class action case. Costco was accused of falsely advertising its Kirkland Signature Moist Flushable Wipes as safe to flush, which led to this deal. The case said that these wipes were not flushable and did a lot of damage to plumbing systems, like clogging pipes, hurting septic systems, and making sewage lines and pumps not work right. People who bought these wipes in New York between July 1, 2011, and May 31, 2017 were mostly touched by this problem.
Costco hasn’t said it did anything wrong or is responsible, but it settled the claim to avoid the uncertainty and costs that come with a long court case. This choice shows a bigger problem in the consumer goods industry: how to market so-called “flushable” wipes and how they affect the environment. This case shows the legal consequences of falsely advertising a product and stresses how important it is to name products correctly.
What is Costco Flushable Wipes Class Action Settlement?
Claims about Costco’s Kirkland Signature Moist Flushable Wipes are at the heart of the class action case. The case was brought by customers who said that these wipes, which were advertised as flushable, were not actually flushable. This false statement caused major plumbing problems, such as clogged pipes, broken septic systems, and messed up sewage lines, which made customers’ lives harder and cost them money.
Companies that sold the wipes said they were safe for sewer and septic systems, but the case says they were a major cause of plumbing problems in many homes. As a result, the claimants said that the product was falsely advertised, which is against New York’s General Business Law §349. This law forbids dishonest business actions and behaviors.

Costco Flushable Wipes Settlement Compensation Details
The claimant is entitled to $1.30 for each unit of flushable wipes they bought during the settlement class period. The minimum payment is $7.50 per family, which makes sure that buyers of less than six units get at least that much. The most a family can get paid is $55.90, which is enough to buy up to 43 units.
The most that can be given in cash to people in the settlement class is $2 million. This includes how much it costs to run the settlement. If the total amount of true claims is higher than this limit, each person’s payment may be cut by the same amount (pro rata).
Besides giving money to each person, the deal also includes money for attorney’s fees and administrative costs. The plaintiff will also get something for their part in the lawsuit.
